It’s absurd how online film discourse has devolved, and prioritized box office as the leading metric for judging a film’s quality. Unless you’re a studio executive, it shouldn’t matter to you as a viewer how much a movie makes.
Part of this, I can only speculate, is the rise in IP driven media in the last 20 years or so. Some earnestly acknowledge the importance of box office as it can lead to sequels for films some folks want to see get follow-ups, which is understandable.
But for the most part, I agree that some of us, especially folks who are chronically online, have fundamentally forgotten how to consume media, or have decided to be ignorant so they can stoke meaningless caterwauling for social media engagement purposes.
